More Than a Feeling: The Real Impact of Your Libraries

February is Love Your Libraries Month! It is a time to pause and appreciate the places that serve our community in ways we may not always see.

We love our libraries for the quiet corners, the storytimes, the familiar faces at the front desk. But beyond the affection lies something even more powerful: real, community-wide impact.

The 2025 Manatee County Public Library Annual Report tells that story clearly.

By the Numbers

Here’s a snapshot of the impact and value Manatee County Libraries delivered last year:

  • $59 million in total community value through books, digital resources, programs, and services

  • 7.8 million transactions, serving nearly half a million residents

  • More than 760,000 Wi-Fi sessions, helping bridge the digital divide for job seekers, students, and seniors

  • 3,137 children and teens engaged in summer learning and literacy programs

  • Every single day: nearly 3,000 visits and 5,400 items checked out

These are not abstract figures. They represent access to opportunity. They represent cost savings for families. They represent doors opened.

A Smart Investment for Manatee County

Public libraries are often described as “good community investments.” Research consistently shows that libraries generate between $4.64 and $10.13 in value for every $1 invested. This impact reflects direct cost savings on books and digital resources, free educational and cultural programming, technology and internet access, workforce development support, and small business resources.

For many families, that value is tangible. It is experienced every time they borrow materials, attend a program, or access services that would otherwise carry a cost.

Communities with strong library engagement see demonstrated benefits:

  • Stronger literacy outcomes

  • Greater workforce participation

  • Reduced social isolation

  • Increased neighborhood stability

Libraries also serve as essential community infrastructure during emergencies—from cooling centers during extreme heat to trusted information hubs during storms.

In short: they are among the most efficient, accessible, and high-impact public assets we have.

Beyond the Data

While the numbers are compelling, the story doesn’t end there.

This year’s report highlights:

  • Expanded early literacy and learning initiatives

  • Growing access to technology, makerspaces, and digital resources

  • Services that reach patrons wherever they are, including homebound delivery

  • The extraordinary contributions of volunteers, Friends groups, and community partners

At their core, our libraries remain safe, welcoming places where residents of every age can learn, grow, and connect. They support workforce development, early literacy, small businesses, and community resilience across Manatee County.

The Library Foundation of Manatee County is proud to partner in this work, strengthening programs and expanding access across our library system. With the support of generous donors and community supporters, we help ensure the impact highlighted in this report continues to grow.
